| Zayra Alvarez as "Dena" |
 |
Zayra Alvarez was born in Puerto
Rico to Luis Alvarez Cruz and Ana Dones Torres and grew
up in the scenic coastal town of Arroyo, along with her
older sister Liza. As a child
she took part in talent shows and school plays. At age
14 she started playing in a few bands looking for self-discovery.
After a few years her parents forced her to choose a
career and go to college. She was unable to pursue her
musical aspirations because she, like the rest of us,
didn’t know where to start. After college she
decided to visit Dallas, Texas for an adventure with
her best friend from home. Little did she know that
Dallas would be where her passion for music would be
rekindled.
“When I went to Texas with my best
friend, I found such an eclectic music scene that pushed
me to want to be more than just a vocalist. She found
herself surrounded by a new group of musician friends
who inspired her to start writing on her own. “It
was then that I knew I could write my own songs without
having to depend on anyone,” states the singer.
Zayra picked up a guitar and 3 months
later she was performing acoustic nights in Dallas’
Deep Ellum club district. She became a regular at Liquid
Lounge wowing the room with her powerful voice every
week singing both in English and Spanish. “I always
believed I could sing but I had no idea I could play
guitar and write songs that people would respond to.
It was a big wake up call for me. I knew then what I
wanted to do with my life. I had earned my degree at
the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, but its music
that keeps me happy and inspired”.
It wasn’t long before she landed
a deal with Brando Records. Home to Blue October, The
Nixons, Deep Blue Something, SouthFM and other Texas
indie rock bands. “When we saw Zayra we knew we
had found something very special”, says Paul Nugent
from Brando. “We signed her right away. It doesn’t
matter what language she sings in, this girl has it
all”. After hitting the clubs night after night
for over two years she recorded her first album- Breaking
Up Grey Skies, an acoustic EP; very raw and pure.
She then embraced her Latin roots and
recorded her defining album “Ruleta”. This
was a breakthrough moment for this beautiful Puerto
Rican as she delivered eleven incredible songs showcasing
her amazing voice and song writing ability. She wrote
and played on every song.
Zayra then hit the road with her new band
and her CD’s packed away in the van. She toured
constantly opening for Blue October, Los Lonely Boys,
La Ley, Julieta Venegas, Circo, Yerba Buena, covering
the West Coast, Texas, Florida, and her home island
Puerto Rico. “It was tough out there playing for
people who had never heard of me before, but I loved
it. I just want to play anywhere I can”.
Blue October invited Zayra to sing on
the haunting “Come In Closer” and perform
on their “History For Sale” and “Argue
with a Tree” tours. They invited her to return
to sing again on their new upcoming single “Into
The Ocean” from their new album Foiled.
“I’m not going to stop playing
no matter what happens”. I feel so lucky to be
waking up every day with another chance to make something
happen with music”.
